An orphanage cares for children of various ages who have no family or have lost their families due to natural disasters. The home usually has a caretaker who monitors the orphanage’s children and a few helpers who look after the residents.

A visit to an orphanage is a life-changing experience full of emotions and sentiments. We were able to visit an orphanage because some people volunteered for us and some of our staff were present.

We paid a visit to the Destiny Children orphanage in Abuja on August 5, 2022. We expected it to be like other orphanages where homeless children are kept and not well cared for. But we were in for a shock. This was a happy home for children, unlike the types of institutions that are poorly run. There were so many children, ranging from infants to boys and girls aged 0 to 18.

The Matron appeared to be at peace and happy doing her job. We stayed with those lovely children for much longer than was planned. On that day, we decided to do something to help the less fortunate members of society.

We noticed that the children were burdened by some deep inner feeling that was not quite sorrowful. They didn’t come out right away. They were not at ease speaking and enjoying themselves freely with us. We engaged them in various activities that they enjoyed and had plenty of opportunities to participate in. For example, instead of watching funny and educational videos on the big screen, we danced to some random DJ songs. We participated in a variety of games and outdoor sports. And since our second, a small but strong bond has developed between all of us.

Then these kids were just as excited as we were for our next visit. When you spend time with them, you will learn many life-changing lessons. To begin with, each person has a tragic story from which they have emerged. When we first started hearing their stories, it felt like our hearts were tearing apart…! We had
deep sympathy for those children during our visit, but
our sympathy will be transformed into a strong bond of care, love, and affection in subsequent visits.
